Language: The official language of China is Mandarin Chinese (Putonghua). English is commonly spoken in major cities, airports, hotels, and tourist areas.
Currency: China uses the Chinese Yuan (CNY), also known as Renminbi, as its official currency. Credit and debit cards are widely accepted in hotels, restaurants, but cash is recommended for local markets, small shops, taxis, and street vendors.
Passport Validity: Your U.S. passport must be valid for at least six months beyond your intended stay in China and have at least one blank page for entry stamps.
Visa Requirements: U.S. citizens require a tourist visa (L visa) to enter China. Visas must be obtained in advance from a Chinese consulate or via authorized visa agencies. Proof of onward travel and accommodation is required.
Travel Insurance: Travel insurance is highly recommended for China travel, especially for city tours in Beijing and Shanghai, cultural excursions in Xi’an, and scenic adventures along the Yangtze River. Coverage should include medical expenses, emergency evacuation, and trip interruption.
Electrical System: China uses Type A, C, and I plugs with a 220V / 50Hz electrical system. Travelers from the U.S. will need a plug adapter and possibly a voltage converter for electronic devices.
